Hit-Run Driver Caught After Striking Patrol Officer In North Bellmore

A driver who fled the scene after striking a patrol officer on Long Island has been apprehended, police announced.

The officer, while on routine motorcycle patrol for the Nassau County Police Department, was traveling northbound on Bellmore Avenue in North Bellmore at around 8:30 a.m. Saturday, July 6 when he was struck by a Subaru traveling westbound at the intersection of Bellmore Avenue and Alice Avenue, police said.

The operator of the vehicle, Hussam Rajab, 40, of Bellmore Road fled the scene and was taken into custody a short time later, according to Nassau County Police. The officer was transported to an area hospital where he is currently listed as critical but in stable condition.

Rajab has been charged with leaving the scene of an auto accident with a serious physical injury. He will be arraigned on Sunday, July 7 at First District Court in Hempstead.
